Before we get started with this weeks preview, I want to put something on people minds in the valley, who are basketball affiliated in the City. The high school shot clock should be considered in the state of Nevada. Only eight states California,Maryland,Massachusetts,New York North Dakota,South Dakota,Rhode Island and Washington, allow unlimited use of a 30 or 35 second shot clock. New York,California and Manyland or big-time states for basketball the nature of competitive play is far more greater than ours. Las Vegas is ready to make the transition to big time hoops just something to think about!! So let’s get down to business on this weeks eight schools.
). Desert Pines high- You would have to consider this program as one of the best in the city, 22-9 overall 14-0 in League. Played a very good out of conference schedule consisting of Westchester,Long Beach poly,Etiwanda,Sierra Canyon,(Corona Ca.)Centennial, all of the schools are very competitive in the state of California some were nationally ranked. Desert Pines went on to win the city title in Division I A. They are returning one of the best point guards in the city 6’0 Capri Uzan,he has the ability to light up the scoreboard. They lost 6’9″Greg Floyd to prep school, but in return they added one of the top three players in the city Je’rell Springer at 6’5 he average 20 ppg 7.7 reb 2 ast and 3 stl last year for(shadow ridge high school). He will be a great fit for this program a versatile score, they also return Jordan Simon who is their defense stopper, in total they return 9 players, for a program that looks like it’s ready to make another run at state.
). Cheyenne high- Team leaders Alahjan Bank and William Moore are gone. So 2016 they are expected to be young long and athletic. 6’3 WF Dwayne Alexander is very athletic have a good fell for the game and demonstrates leadership skills,he’s explosive he average 9 ppg 1.9 reb last season. 6’2 SG Kavon Williams average 12.6 ppg last seasons,he is very athletic one of the underrated players in Vegas, have the ability to attack the rim and he’s an effective scorer, he’s a player to watch. 6’1 Jalen Willis very long, gaining some varsity experience will help him out tremendously coaching staff has said he’s been a great worker thus far. Damion Vonty shooting quick release is going to help spread the floor for his team another player who is demonstrating leadership skills. That great c/o 2020 some of those young men will have to step up immediately, 5’11 PG Keshawn Hall will be one of them,it’s being said that he is making great strides in developing his jumpshot. This young fella will have to grow up fast they will need him, bench play will be critical for this program it will need them night in and night out the underclassmen will have to make the transition and step up and give good minutes.
). Faith Lutheran high- Coming off a good season last year at 19-8, this program will be losing a lot of scoring production from its team 7 seniors departed, much will fall on 6’4 WF Elijah Kothe average 9.5 ppg 7.4 reb 1.9 stl last season. His production will need to increase in all areas in order for this team to have a chance,he has the ability to put up big numbers. Jaylan Fox will need to be that floor general for his team he average 7.4 ppg 4 ast 2.8 reb 2.2 stl last season, his game is Smooth,he will make a difference for this team. But it looks like this program is in transition they will need production from other players.
). Palo Verde high- You would like to think with 10 returning players coming back big things would be expected, but the lost of Tyler Miller was big 27 ppg 3.8 reb 3.1 ast that was 80% of its production gone. Cole Hendershot at 6’6 average 8.7 ppg 6.9 reb 1.3 stl will need to step up big and be the difference maker for his team, James Camp 5 ppg 2.1 reb will have to step up. Coach Paul Sanchez will have to give his best coaching effort this upcoming season this program will need his leadership.
). Chaparral high- How about those Cowboys coming off a very good season at 18-10 overall and 11-3 in league play, return 8 players from last year’s team they will need production from 6’0 Samuel Porras who average 10.5 ppg 3.3 ast 3 reb 1.6 stl, they will need for him to be consistent this upcoming season. 6’5 WF Ronnie Hicks Will need to play with more poise, and be a double-double man night in and night out in order for this team to have a successful season once again. Bench play will need to stay in double figures,in order for this team to compete for a league title.
). Coral Academy- This program did a great job with the players that they had last season and believe me,if they had a bench they would’ve gave the city problems. Returning is 6’2 SG Isaiah Spears 21.8 ppg 2.8 reb 4.6 ast 2.5 stl and by the way a GPA of 4.75 he will be playing for somebody next year in college. 6’5 WF Ryan Djino 12 ppg 5.5 reb will put up big numbers, he’s another young man that have a excellent GPA and will be playing somewhere next year. For his size he runs the floor well and he will be a key component for this program.. That great c/o 2020 will have aother player suiting up for varsity, 6’2 Isaac Spears will come in immediately and give scoring relief to his big brother. Don’t sleep on this independent program they have a great coaching staff.
). Spring Valley high- This program is in transition but the new addition of head coach Paul Blair will help, they are in a very tough conference, competing against the likes of Bishop Gorman,Durango,Sierra Vista and Clark. I believe this is good for this program this will force these young men to take the game serious and compete at a very high-level, only time will tell of the progress that they will make.
). Legacy high- The Longhorns will need leadership this season much will fall on the shoulders of 6’5 WF De’Eric Marlowe,a Lefty that has a nice shooting touch, who put up good numbers before he was rule ineligible by the Clark County School District due to a transfer rule. 6’1 G Chris White will need to play with more control and be the floor general for this team that lack sizes. He must cut down turnovers to give his team and opportunity to compete in games. This program must be scrappy every night it steps on the floor. 9 seniors departed and this program finished 12-15 last season,it must do better underclassmen have to step up and play big.
VEGAS ALL DAY! I THOUGHT YOU KNEW! WE REP OUR CITY!! Next week we will be presenting eight more schools in the valley..
