Let’s Take A Look At Jayveous McKinnis Of Jackson State University……

I knew if we were going to create a brand (Unit 1 Hoop Source) of substance, we would have to bring awareness to players that the country was not familiar with on a national level.

As we continue to survey the landscape of basketball, Here is a name that you are not familiar with! 6’7 220 pound Jayveous McKinnis of Brandon, Mississippi.

McKinnis, a Junior at Jackson State, is a walk-in double double. As a Sophomore, he was named the 2019-20 SWAC Defensive Player of the Year after playing in 32 games for the Tigers.

Last season McKinnis averaged 10 rebounds per game. He also had 12 assists, 29 steals, and 60 blocked shots on the season. Coming into the 2020-21 season, there has not been any drop off in his production. Micknnis is averaging 15 points, 10 rebounds and is shooting 57.8% from the field per game. He is also shooting 76.9% from the free-throw line.

Let’s take a look at Jayveous skillset! He is a long athletic wing who has the ability to pound the glass inside. Jayveous is explosive off the bounce and has good lateral movement. He can be very disruptive as a rim protector. I am impressed with his ability to step out on the perimeter and defend.

Jayveous is more of an interior scorer, but demonstrates the ability to step outside and knockdown shots. He has good eye’s and hand coordination with a soft touch around the rim.

Overall there is much to like about Mr. McKinnis game. He definitely has a lot of tools to work with and if he continues to work hard, I see a place for him at the next level.
