Even though high school basketball is our primary focus we are making an effort to extend ourselves to the collegiate level. Once a week we will choose a impact freshman to cover. We consider this our college edition to “Unit 1 Hoop Source.”
Let’s take a look at one of the top freshman in the country. His play is starting to jump off the page when we are talking about freshman. 7’0 210 pound Evan Mobley is living up to the expectations that surrounded him as an incoming freshman!
In his first game of the season Mobley allowed his game to do the talking against Cal Baptist. In a highly contested game Mobley put up eye popping numbers. He played a team high 39 minutes, shooting 10-15 from the field with 9 rebounds and 3 blocks.
Mobley stat numbers are very impressive he’s first in scoring at 17.9 points per game. He is also second in rebounds at 9.0 per game, and first in block shots with 15 on the season. His overall field goal percentage is 61% which is good for a freshman.
Let’s take a look at Mobley’s skill set. He has good eyes and hands coordination with the ability to face up and attack off the dribble. Mobley is extremely effective in ball motion offense. His play making skills are above average; Mobley also is an unselfish player with a good basketball IQ.
Evan is a decent interior scorer with the ability to play above the rim. I would love to see him become more aggressive on the offensive side. He runs the floor extremely well in transition. Evan is an Athletic big who has an active motor!
Evan’s size and length creates problems on the defensive side. He is an outstanding shot blocker and rim protector. I can honestly say I love everything about Evan’s ability on the defensive side. He has great court awareness and recovers fast when he’s out of position.
Evan Mobley is definitely a player to watch the rest of this season. The sky is the limit, Mobley definitely has the tools to be a Top 5 pick.
