Diana Taurasi and Skylar Diggins-Smith combined for 52 points to help the Mercury defeat the Aces 92-85, completing their season sweep of the Aces.
Taurasi has been in “Mamba Mentality” form over the last three games and this game was no different. Taurasi came out firing on all cylinders and seemed completely unstoppable, as she scored 26 of her 32 points in the first half.
The Mercury hit more than 10 3-pointers in the first half. Led by Taurasi who was certainly showing off her shooting range, hitting six 3-pointers from well behind the line. She finished 10 of 22 from the field, including 7 of 15 from threes, and also dished out seven assists. It was Taurasi’s 13 straight double figures game with 20 points or more.
Las Vegas Coach Bill Laimbeer wasn’t happy with the lack of defensive effort on Taurasi and the Mercury, as he felt the Aces weren’t in their space enough. “We weren’t playing a solid team defense or individual defense in the first half. That’s what they do. They make shots, and they feed off that. She leads them, but then the rest of them start making shots.”
The Mercury playing without Brittney Griner, had 13 different players score in the first half.
Skylar Diggins-Smith had 20 points and matched Taurasi’s seven assists. Shatoria Walker-Kimbrough gave a great spark off the bench for the Mercury finishing with 15 points. Kia Vaughn made three straight buckets for the Mercury and scored eight of her 14 points in the fourth quarter, as the Aces pulled within four points with 7:46 left to play.
Jackie Young led the Aces with 20 points and seven rebounds, and Dearica Hamby had 18 points and 13 rebounds. Western Conference Player of the month, A’ja Wilson added 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Aces.
With five games left in the regular season the Aces have already secured a playoff spot and are chasing the Storm for the top spot in the league. Ace’s Coach Bill Laimbeer was named WNBA Coach of the month.
The Aces are back in action Thursday taking on the Connecticut Sun.
